Copeland MP campaigns for fair pay

26th January 2015

Jamie Reed MP, Member of Parliament for Copeland and Labour’s Shadow Health Minister, will be speaking at a TUC seminar in Carlisle on Monday 23rd February as part of a campaign on fair pay.

The TUC will be holding their second annual Fair Pay Fortnight in February 2015, following the success of the event last year. The TUC plans to continue its campaign on fair pay and pay issues, including seeking to boost rates of wage growth and reducing pay inequalities.

Jamie Reed will be joined at the seminar by Cllr Lee Sherriff, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Carlisle, Beth Farhat, Northern TUC regional secretary, and a representative from the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Copeland MP and Labour’s Shadow Health Minister, Jamie Reed MP said:

“Families are £1,600 worse off every year because of the actions of this government, and wages have fallen for full-time workers by over £2,000 a year.

“For the first time since the 1920s, the British people are now going to be worse off at the end of a Parliament than they were at the start. That is a damning indictment of this government’s record.

“Far too often, people hear the boasts from George Osborne that the economy is growing, and yet they know that this does not reflect the reality of what is happening in their life. People are having to work harder and harder to make ends meet, but are getting nowhere.

“Only Labour can tackle the scandal of low pay. We have committed to increasing the National Minimum Wage if we are elected in May, to ensure that low paid workers who put in a hard day’s work are rewarded for doing so, and to cut the costs of failure in our social security system.

“We are also committed to tackling exploitative zero-hours contracts that cause workers such insecurity at work. People don’t know how they will make ends meet from week to week, and they are unable to plan their lives due to their uncertain work hours. It is clear that this situation cannot go on.

“It was a Labour government that introduced the National Minimum Wage, and it will be a Labour government that will take radical, ambitious action and stand up for all those on low pay.”

The TUC Fair Pay Seminar with Jamie Reed MP will take place on Monday 23rd February 2015, 5.15pm – 7.00pm in the Flensburg Room, Carlisle City Council, Civic Centre, Carlisle, CA3 8QG.

The event is free and refreshments will be provided.
