Number of Apprenticeship Starts in Copeland Falls

Figures obtained from the House of Commons Library have shown that the number of apprenticeship starts in Copeland have fallen in each of the last three years:

2011/12
2012/13
2013/14
2014/15 (Aug to April only)
Apprenticeship Starts in Copeland Constituency
990
980
950
830

These figures were collected by the House of Commons Library from the Department for Business, Innovations and Skills and the Further Education Data Library.

They show a worrying downward trend in the number of new apprenticeships each year in the area.  Copeland MP, Jamie Reed has called for more Government support for businesses who take on apprentices and also for more high quality apprenticeships to be provided.

Copeland MP and Labour’s Shadow Health Minister, Jamie Reed MP said:

“Apprenticeships are a fundamental good for those involved, the businesses that employ them and for our community as a whole.

“Our best days are ahead of us, but the only way our young people are going to get the skills they need is if they can access high quality training and apprenticeship schemes.  It is clear that under this Government, the number of apprentices starting work in Copeland each year is falling.  This is unacceptable.

“This is a wake-up call for the Government, they must do much more to support businesses who take on apprentices and also do more to help young people get the skills they need to take advantage of the economic opportunities coming our way.”
