The shallowness of the Government’s ‘Northern Powerhouse’ Agenda has been highlighted in a response to a Parliamentary Question tabled by Copeland MP Jamie Reed.
The Government have been unable to explain the geographical boundaries of the Northern Powerhouse initiative, but now the Chancellor has shown his lack of geographical knowledge.
When specifically asked by Jamie Reed if the Chancellor had undertaken any official visits to Copeland or the rest of Cumbria as part of the Northern Powerhouse initiative, the Government responded that the Chancellor has visited ‘Manchester, Newcastle and Teesside’ saying only that he would visit Cumbria in due course.
On the Government’s logistical Jamie Reed has said that the Chancellor ‘should perhaps get a new map, come to Cumbria and see the real Northern Powerhouse.’
Copeland MP, Jamie Reed said:
“West Cumbria’s best days are ahead of us and we are making great progress. We stand on the edge of a truly transformative era and the Government should give us the tools we need to succeed.
“That the Chancellor, when asked if he had visited Cumbria, said that he’d been to Manchester, Newcastle and Teesside says everything you need to know about the Chancellor’s attitude to our region.
“We are about to see the biggest single private investment in our region and could become the fastest growing sub-regional economy in the country. The Chancellor should perhaps get a new map, visit Cumbria and see the real Northern Powerhouse in action.”
